Hybrids

You were born a caster, but later became a vampire. Maybe you were a human + but got scratched and became a shifter. Or perhaps your father was Fae and your mother a shifter. Maybe a Centaur and a.. well you get the idea.

Sometimes things happen that alter the course of your existence. Here's how we balance those things out.

Myths, Legends, and Folklore

This is truly the wild, wild west of the supernatural roleplay experience. This is where most sims throw their hands up and say, "Nope! Pick a race." While the urge to do so is great, the whole point behind Thirteen Pines is to be able to play almost whatever comes to mind and all of the things that never work.  So we're giving this a try.  We're sticking to the 'no applications' promise, even in this area, but we will be giving a bit more scrutiny to what you choose to make sure you're on the right track and aren't going to break the sim.

Just like the other pages, we have a couple rules- and by now if you've read the other pages, these should seem pretty standard. We do ask that you balance out your character.  Don't take all the talents but have none of the weaknesses.  NO ONE likes a Mary Sue. Even if his name is Jeff the Jeering.

1. Don't be a Know It All, Do It All, Jack or Jill of All Trades.  You cannot have abilities and talents of both races at full power. Full stop. One of the two races that make up your hybrid nature will be dominant.

2. Hybrids are only a combination of 2 races. Full stop.

3. You must take at least one Racial Themed weaknesses from both races.

Becoming a Hybrid: This is absolutely open to really just about anything as far as how you got to where you are now. Mixed heritage so you were born a hybrid, perhaps a forced change such as being sold off or stolen by another race for political reasons, or perhaps a caster trying to flee an arranged marriage and goes and gets turned into a vampire or shifter.  The options are wide open.  This also counts for characters who are in RP as one race and want to change to another.  Please work with staff is this is something you'd want to do. There are only two that are out of the question: Vampires and Shifters. You can't cross between these two. Everyone who tried has died a horrible, violent death. The blood does not mingle. Every shifter child hears about that one friend who has a cousin who's mom said that their grandmother had a neighbor that exploded when a vampire tried to turn them.  Care should be given on Fae who become bitten or turned into vampires; the doors to your pantheon may slam shut on you- its a risk you'll have to consider. And finally, Mythic and another race just doesn't exist. If you have part of that something in you- you're that something. Angels- Demons- Phoenix- Minotaur- whateveratuar- that's what you are. You can't Hybrid it with another race. You're just... that.

I can't know it all? Why?: Hybrid doesn't mean you get all the perks. One side will be dominant over the other. It is a struggle daily at the biological level, and for some, at the spiritual or soul level. And we don't want all powerful super roided out vampires with three magic spheres. Nope.

Age, Ability, and Talents: Your age will be determined by what your Hybrid races are and can really be anything as long as its explainable.  Abilities and Talents, as previously mentioned, can be pulled from both races but only one is dominate. So if a Caster becomes a vampire, the vampiric traits take over and you lose all of your magic except 1- and that's only at half power. (That is just one example)

Local Collectives: Hybrids tend to try and blend in with members of the dominant race.... if they can pass. Attitudes amongst the races vary from area to area, and from race to race, but Hybrids usually experience more than a medium amount of racism and in some places outright danger.  Thirteen Pines has always been a very accepting city. At least until recently.

Leadership: There is not a single hybrid leader that gathers just the hybrids together. There are rumors about small packs of Hybrids that sometimes team up, but most of them flame out and go their separate ways as they can rarely agree on anything.

Creating Your Character

Your abilities, talents, and weaknesses will vary depending on which races you have chosen.  It really does become a 'Choose your own adventure' and you can pick from both sides.   We want you to be able to be a unique little snowflake- but not an almighty powerful one that can Godzilla all over the Golden Gate Bridge. There are some pretty hefty downsides to being a hybrid, too.

Just for simplicity's sake, here's a good way to put together your Hybrid:

1. Were you born a hybrid, or did you become one later? If later, how?

2. What are the two races which make you a hybrid?

3. Which race is dominant?

4. Pick your abilities, weaknesses, and talents from your dominant race.

5. Pick the 1 talent (Or magic sphere if you're part caster), the 1 ability, and at least one racial weakness from your secondary race. The talent and ability will be at half power.

6. Add any additional weaknesses that are not race locked.

7. If you wish, you may add additional Abilities, Weaknesses, and Talents that are unique to Hybrids.  Don't go overboard.

8. Profit.

Hybrid Abilities

The following abilities are restricted to Hybrids only as, by their nature, they only apply here.

Believable: Whether it is because you are a tremendous liar, you've been incredibly lucky, no one has captured your blood or maybe you have someone to vouch for you so far at every occasion, you have bluffed your way into making people believe you are full-blooded of one race or the other.  Or maybe you just haven't been found out yet.

I Know You! : Your hybrid nature allows you to immediately sense other supernaturals of either of your backgrounds. So if you are a vampire/witch hybrid, you can tell a vampire or a witch just by being in their presence.  This only works for the two that make you a hybrid.

Hybrid Weaknesses

The following weaknesses are restricted to Hybrids only as, by their nature, they only apply here.

Double Jeopardy:  Not only is your secondary race abilities and talents limited and at half power, your dominant race is also at half power. You never fully "transformed" when you changed from one to the other- or maybe a parent of each race were both strong enough that they cancelled each other out. How you got there is up to you.  But no matter how long you live, you will never be strong in either race.

Exiled and Reviled: Your hybrid nature not only got you kicked out and shunned by one or both races, none will come to your aid. You are completely alone and none will assist you for fear of being found out that they assisted you. You have a mark on your head, your name is mud, and somehow everyone knows it.  It is a dark secret that would spell ruin if found out.

Physical Manifestation: You have a permanent, visible, physical manifestation of one of your racial backgrounds. It can be fur, fangs, talons, a tail, non-human looking eyes or ears, scales, horns, something.  These are NOT an advantage of any kind (e.g., your big shifter ears don't hear any better, your tail is not prehensile, your scales can't protect you from fire, your gills won't let you breathe under water). These are completely non-functional, and a big ole red flag for what you are... or at least what part of you is. If you take this weakness, it must be something you can't keep hidden at all times.

Addictive Personality: While it can be argued that anyone can have this weakness (and yes, you can!) this particular stripe is particular to Hybrids. You are a JUNKIE for something you can only get from your secondary race.  It does not have to be a substance- it can be a behavior, hell, even a fetish of some kind- but it is something that you can really only get as a full-blooded member of your secondary race. If it were a sea dweller, perhaps you are addicted to the beach to the point you must spend time there or you fall apart. Shifters maybe can't cope without sleeping in a puppy pile and break into the pet store sometimes to snuggle with the kitties. You have a lot of freedom to make up what it is- but it should be significant.

Hybrid Talents

The following talents are restricted to Hybrids only as, by their nature, they only apply here.

Doublemint Gum: Your hybrid nature is somewhat easier to hide because you managed to develop (or keep) two of your subordinate race's abilities, talents, or magic spheres (still at half power). If you take this, you MUST also take the weakness "Physical Manifestation".

He Said He Was Vers: This talent will restrict you to 1 ability and 1 talent from each of your races maximum as part of being a hybrid however you have them at full power.  If you take this talent, you MUST take the weakness "Physical Manifestation"
